The Sweet Truth: A Sugar-Free / Wheat-Free Kitchen Review

The Sweet Truth: A Sugar-Free / Wheat-Free Kitchen
Average Reviews:

The author provides a list of "must have" ingredients to always have on hand - but most all of the recipes call for items that are not on the list and these items are not run-of-the-mill grocery store stock. Many of the recipes seem to be quite involved. For example, the chocolate chip cookie recipes not only involve mixing the dough - but also require freezing the cookies on the cookie sheets for 30 minutes before baking. I don't know about you, but I don't have that much freezer space. When the author tells me to pull out my dehydrater to prepare fruit for her recipes, I put the book aside. I am not a professional cook. I need good recipes that don't consume a lot of time to make and that are practical. These recipes may produce great food, if you have hours to devote to the process. The book is expensive compared to others, so unless you have a lot of time and close proximity to a natural foods market, I would not invest in it.

Confessions of an East Coast Raw Vegan Review

Confessions of an East Coast Raw Vegan

The book's honest and entertaining introduction offers inspiration and insight to anyone who seeks to improve their relationship with food. After reading it and trying many of the delicious dishes, I have significantly cut down on eating meat and overall become a healthier eater.
Even a novice dehydrator (like myself) can make AMAZING food with the recipes - they are that clear and precise. I especially love the flatbreads. As someone who tries to cut down on gluten intake, these have offered a much-needed (and better tasting) alternative to baked bread. The salads and desserts are also a hit, impressing even the most finicky eater whenever I take one to a potluck.
In sum this is absolutely brilliant. The author truly is an artist, with the palette being her canvas.

If you suffer from food allergies (gluten, casein, sugar) this book is for you. Kelly Brozyna's recipes are unique and original and are so delicious they make you forget what you had to give up because of allergies. The photographs look great and the recipe instructions are easy to follow. Ms. Brozyna kept in mind that most people don't have a lot of time and her recipes are not time consuming or complicated. There is also an informative section in the beginning that deals with food storage, sugar avoidance, natural sweeteners, autism, and all around healthy living. I highly recommend the almond muffins, custard pie and broccoli quiche. I look forward to making and eating a better variety of "safe" foods with The Spunky Coconut Cookbook!

Fresh: The Ultimate Live-Food Cookbook Review

Fresh: The Ultimate Live-Food Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have at least four other raw food cookbooks. The recipes in them always have a thousand ingredients and take forever to produce. I wind up not using them because of the exotic ingredients or the time it takes to make the food. Soaking, cutting, blending, juicing, dehydrating, all in one recipe usually!
This book uses simple, available ingredients and a minimum of time to prepare. I can usually prepare a dish from what's already in my house, which if you've used any other book, is usually impossible. Yes you might need to blend something and then dehydrate it, but you probably didn't have to soak it and juice it and hang it somewhere first.
The other thing I really like about the book is that if you use their recipes for salad dressings, for example, you are not just adding flavor, but you are also adding nutritional content. It's all very well thought-out. It's a lovely little book that I recommend to anyone who is interested in making simple, elegant raw food dishes that taste great.

Cookbooks need not—indeed, should not—involve cooking, say the authors of this authoritative, beautifully illustrated book. And they should know. Sergei and Vayla Boutenko bring fifteen years' experience to this collection of scrumptious, sophisticated recipes and comprehensive guide to the raw life.Fresh covers the whole range of recipes, including savory dishes, desserts, fermented foods, drinks, and wild foods. Techniques common to the recipes are introduced and clearly explained, including an inventory of uncommon fruits and how to handle and prepare them, as well as an immersion into the five basic flavors and the herbs, fruits, vegetables, and grains that help chefs bring out each flavor best. The authors introduce the three stages of adaptation to this lifestyle and provide a concise review of minimal equipment requirements and ideal appliance additions for the well-stocked raw kitchen.

I've had my dehydrator for 5 years and thought I'd dried everything in every conceivable way but Mary Bell has some fantastic ideas. Easy read and easier recipes. Especially liked the section on backpacker food. My dehydrator has been running 24hrs/day since I got this book. Thank you, Mary Bell, for this great book.

Far from being a fad, food dyhydrating is one of the most ancient, effective, and nutritous ways of preserving food. Now, at last, there is a book that teaches absolutely everything there is to know about using an electric food dyhydrator to dry foods at home -- and gives more than 100 foolproof recipes for scrumptious snacks and meals made from dried foods.

With this extraordinary book, you can learn how to cross junk food and expensive store-bought snacks off your family's shopping list -- and add to your cupboard homemade, preservative-free fruit leathers, candied apricots, beef (and fish) jerkies, "sun" dried tomotoes, corn chips, banana chips, and so much more!

Mary Bell gives specific techniques and instructions for preparing every kind of fruit (from apples to watermelon) and vegetable (from asparagus to zucchini). She also provides important shopping tips for buying an electric food dehydrator. The recipes for cooked meals (including mushroom soup, sloppy joes, pesto, and moist banana bread) will make this book a kitchen classic. And recipes for lightweight, filling trail snacks mean that the book will travel, too.

Additional chapters explain to how make herb seasonings, granolas, celery powder, cosmetics, dried fruit sugars, potpourri -- and even pet treats!

Food drying is an excellent way for gardeners to preserve their produce. It is a great way to make healthful snacks for the kids. It's perfect for the new wave of thrifty consumers who can't bear to spend dollars at health food stores for treats they cold make for pennies themselves. And food drying doesn't use chemicals or preservatives-so it's great for you and for the planet, too!
