i was thrilled to find this book so easy to read and understand. I also appreciated that it was divided into sections for easy reference. Loved the recommendations for supplements - some I'm familiar with already and know they do a good job. It's refreshing to find another voice for sensible, sustainable, and accessibly healthy food and life-style - no need for strenuous diets, outrageous chemicals or weird exercise programs - just decide what changes you need to make by using this guide!

The Balanced Plate: The Essential Elements of Whole Foods and Good Health Review

The Balanced Plate: The Essential Elements of Whole Foods and Good Health
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just discovered this book and was really excited to read it. I must say that overall I wasn't disappointed. Her explanations on how we impact our bodies and the earth by the choices we make in food and even in the products we use is truly convincing. Her enthusiasm for food is contageous. The fact that she discusses various eating plans and the philosophy behind each is really wonderful. The amount of good information presented is amazing. That said, I was a little confused about the recipes. I am of Italian heritage so I was raised on olive oil, beans, nuts, grains, etc and continue to make them my basic food choices. But just because nuts and good quality oils have health benefits doesn't mean you can use them with wild abandon. Some of the recipes in this book have way too much fat per serving. Unless you're extremely active I truly can't imagine using most of these recipes on a regular basis and being able to control your weight. For example, there is a recipe for "Massaged Greens". This veg side dish has 11 grams of fat per serving (and only 150 calories). As someone who eats alot of greens, I can say first hand that a drizzle of good quality oil is all that you really need to season greens, anything more and you drown out their flavor. The "Walnut Oatmeal Raisin Cookies" are 400 calories and 21 grams of fat per cookie! To be fair, not all of the recipes are high in fat but the majority are. The other odd thing about many of these recipes are the copius amounts of sodium. Soy sauce (shoyu) seems to be the culprit here. The "Soba Noodle Salad" and the "Soba Noodle Soup" have 3,130 mg and 3,390 mg of sodium per serving respectively. And the above mentioned "Massaged Greens": 960 mg. of sodium per serving. Alot of recipes have 600 mg or higher (although not all recipes are high in sodium). So, I was baffled that Dean Ornish would write the Forward. Unless he's loosened his militant stance on the "proper" way to eat for health, he seemed like the last person who would herald most of the recipes in this tome. So maybe one should use the philosophy of this book every single day but the recipes only a few times a week.
All of this being said, I would still recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to live better and impact the environment less.

I met Eloise Nelson 2 years ago and decided to do her 14 day gourmet cleanse program just as a way to start off the spring season. At the end of the 14 days, I felt so amazing, there was no going back. I have been mostly raw for 2 years now and, while I use many cookbooks, this is my "go to" raw cookbook. Everything is simple, amazingly tasty and so good for you!! Eating raw doesn't mean giving up flavor or the enjoyment of eating. Give it 2 weeks - you'll be glad you did!

I had the pleasure of meeting Carmella a few times and having extended conversations. She is an amazing, down to earth, realistic person. The last time I saw her, she had this book published. I own so so many Raw, Vegan, Paleo books but I have to say, this is at the top of the list. Its a no-frills, information packed book with plenty of easy and mouthwatering dishes (and color photos for almost every recipe). Who else has step by step recipes for Kombucha, KimChi and Irish Moss? Her blog, as well as Kristen-Suzanne's Raw Blog spot, are my favorites. Both down to earth ladies who primary goal is to deliver a lot of information to you (and not to sell you on their products and seminars.). If you purchase this book, you will not be disappointed.

The Raw Food Diet Myth is a thought provoking exploration of the revolutionary philosophy of raw and living foods. Author and raw foodist Dr. Ruthann Russo proves that raw food is much more than a diet. She does this by bringing together an enjoyable and clear description of the food, lifestyle, treatment of the earth, each other and the quest for physical, spiritual and mental health within the raw food movement. In the section on Basics, you will read about the long and strong history of the raw food movement beginning with early leaders like physicians Max Bircher-Benner and Max Gerson to leaders of today like Dr. Gabriel Cousens and David Wolfe. In the Food section, Russo describes healthy conflict within the movement in chapters devoted completely to raw chocolate, raw sweeteners, and water. In the Lifestyle Russo delves into health, spirituality and physical fitness as well as ethics, economics, and even raw pets. The book provides you with worthwhile information to make a conscious decision about whether to incorporate any of the raw and living food philosophy into your own philosophy of living.

The purpose of this book is to introduce you to the revolutionary philosophy of raw and living foods by pulling together all of the components, including, but not limited to, diet, into one place. What you ll need to go raw

Eating Without Heating: Favorite Recipes from Teens Who Love Raw Food Review

Eating Without Heating: Favorite Recipes from Teens Who Love Raw Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book "Eating Without Heating", written by two
teens, displays wisdom beyond their years.
The book is magnificently illustrated with drawings by Valya.
"Eating Without Heating is a guide book to all things raw.
It is a treatise on the raw food philosophy. It is a cookbook.
It is a living testament to a family that bucked the school
establishment which tried to induce children to drink milk
and eat fast-food burgers for lunch. Their recipes are quite
a bit more sophisticated than just sliced cucumbers with dill
sauce. One example is an entire chapter on fermenting foods.
Sergei and Valya simply soak one cup of nuts in water overnight
and blend the resulting product in a blender until it is
smooth like heavy cream. They strain the mixture through
a sprout bag, pour into a jar, cover with cheesecloth,
and set in a warm place where the magic transfer of gases
and air through the mixture produces a tart yogurt-like
food. Try this with cashews and chopped mango.
They produce unique cheeses with the same method as
above. I'll soon be trying their sauerkraut and kim chee
recipes. I salivate at the thought of producing my own.
I've tasted raw breads, but have only wondered at the
mastery of culinary skills necessary to create such miracles.
From sprouted raw flax bread with kamut and walnuts to
chili corn chips, the Boutenko children make it all
seem simple, in easy-to-follow recipes. If you love
sourdough bread, you've got to try their recipe which
employs raw almond pulp with flax and caraway seeds.
These kids have timing! They save the best for last,
cookies, ice creams, and cakes. With secrets learned
from their mother (sprinkle coconut or nuts so that
the cake does not stick to the pan), and photographs
that tempt and delight (walnut cream cake, un-chocolate
cake, un-cheesecake, and many others), these recipes
are what one would expect to be served at the gates
of Valhalla. Try the Macadamia Date Pie or the
amazing Coconut-Date Truffles.

I wish there were some way that I could get this message out to every single one of you. A message that would touch your lives and have you see that happiness is not sold in little baggies or a 40 oz. glass bottle. I wish that there were some way to show you, my own generation, that we can all be happy and free without drugs. I wish I could stop you from hurting your body and make you see how much you will regret it later in life. Most of all I wish that I could unite all of you and show you that every single one of you is beautiful and miraculous and that life would not be the same without you. Unfortunately, that is impossible, because the only way of teaching is actually not teaching at all! The only way I can get others to follow is by being a good example and sharing my story when asked. The words of even the wisest man are worth nothing if no one wants to hear them!

LifeFood Recipe Book: Living on Life Force Review

LifeFood Recipe Book: Living on Life Force
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This being one of the more niche books of the raw/living foods genre, it was not until I had been at least two years into it had I bothered to pick it up.
I was pleasently surprised when I leafed through this gem. The recipes in here are out of this world. There are many little tidbits of information which are thrown in just for your information.
So, the beginning of the book is a preperation for your kitchen, what to have in the way of equipment and condiments that are frequently used. When that is out of the way, they jump right into the principles of what Lifefood actually is and some more information on why to choose Lifefood.
The recipe portion is quite expansive and inventive. I applaude Annie for her intuitive recipes and the massive abundance of flavour they bring to every meal. By far my favorite recipes have to be the "Sweet Thai Tomato Soup", which by the way I recommend with extra cayenne pepper, and the Teriyaki Pate, which is just fantastic on some sheets of nori with extra greens and cucumber or rolled up in a collard leaf.
The desserts are out of this world. Recipes like the "Phat Black Sorbet", which consists of dark cherries and other delictables, are just incredible and really make this book stand out.
The Lifefood fasts they outline are good and provide a solid platform for anyone to begin their experiences of purging, cleansing and fasting with. They are nutritional fasts, meaning you dont go hungry but are still giving your digestive system a rest.
The Lifefood fasts typically consist of a two week protocol where you consume only liquids (blended soups, smoothies, juices, sorbets, liquid salads and Lifefood beverages like Electrolyte Lemonade) for a period of two weeks while you do a couple liver Flushes and a couple Gallbladder flushes.
My personal experience with the Gallbladder flushes in incredible. I am so glad that I have done them. My digestion has improved immensely and my metabolism has gone up. I have already done two and am going to start the third one soon.
The other major cleanse this book outlines is a parasite flush. This regimine is an easy one that almost everyone should consider and consult their alternative healthcare practitioner (like a Licensed Accupunctureist, a Naturopath or a Chiropractor) with. I highly suggest it and have noticed great improvement since starting it.
Overall I believe that Annie Padden Jubb and David Jubb have done a wonderful job on this book. Their knowledge of recipe synergy, knowledge of colloidal physiology and overall understanding of esoteric herbalism makes me give this book a five star rating.
If you wish to get all you can out of this book, make sure you pick up David Jubb's other books "Secrets to an Alkaline Body" and "Jubb's Cell Rejuvenation - Colloidal Biology: A Symbiosis".
This may be one of the most important books you add to your library when it comes to overall understanding of your recipe choices and your health.

The Raw Food Primer Review

The Raw Food Primer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having read literally DOZENS of great raw foods books, (as a raw foods nutrition specialist, I have to know this subject, backwards and forwards,) I must say, I was underwhelmed. This book just simply is NOT a raw foods primer, as the title states, but the "artist's" self-promotion.
A primer would teach basic raw foods techniques. You'd be better off with Steve Meyerowitz' Sproutman's Kitchen Garden Cookbook. At least you'd learn how to sprout, how to juice, how to dehydrate, etc. This book assumes you already know that.
A primer would teach basic recipes. You'd be better off with Rhio's Hooked on Raw. At least you'd have dozens upon dozens of simple, basic recipes you could go home and fix up for dinner TONIGHT.
All this book is, is several pages the "artist's" ART work, and a few pages of boring, overly-complicated froo-froo cuisine.
This is NOT a primer. It's showing off.

Forget everything you have been taught about eating raw. This is not a boring book about bland salads and munching on carrot sticks for breakfast lunch and dinner —The Raw Food Primer is filled with fifty delicious, easy-to-follow recipes that are sure to make your tummy growl.Eating is more than just taking nutrients in. It's also pleasure, communion, and the taste of life. With the blossoming of raw food as an artistic cuisine, eating is also about discovering intense natural flavors and enticing high palate food lovers to explore new/old ways to eat. As the raw food movement enters the culinary mainstream, Chef Alex is right here to help with The Raw Food Primer as a starter kit. Those who try these succulent recipes will enjoy deep comfort, great nutrition, and fresh paths to glowing health. For many, raw food is already a way of life. But when we try to explain it to friends, family or students who don't yet know the pleasures and the benefits of eating "raw", they may say, "You can't keep up your energy with raw carrots" or "Yuck! That sounds really boring" or "I can't give up my pasta!" To answer such remarks, Chef Alex has written The Raw Food Primer. She gently introduces "first timers" to the concept of raw foods and a vegetarian diet. Encouraging them to add raw food slowly to their diet, she avoids a zealous approach that may frighten off people curious about "uncooking" but not quite ready to give raw cuisine a full embrace. With her charming, low-pressure style, Ferrara eases the reader into true eagerness to try tasty raw dishes and reap the health benefits like more energy. Many people who have gone raw report that they have a leaner structure, clearer skin and eyes, and they no longer experience problems with allergies or fatigue. The Raw Food Primer is perfect for curious students of this revolutionary food experience or the more experienced raw foodist — or anyone who merely appreciates delicious food.

The Raw Transformation: Energizing Your Life with Living Foods Review

The Raw Transformation: Energizing Your Life with Living Foods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Recently, my mother got married and I was seated at a table with a raw (or living) food advocate. Having heard her story how eating raw cured her husband from arthritis and having tasted a mock strawberry cheesecake made from cashew nuts and cashew nut butter (it was fabulous)...I rushed to buy the book that evening.
I am an extremely visual person, so getting a book that had pictures of the finished recipes was a necessity, as well as getting a book that outlined the raw food principles, fasting and more. To say the least, I was far from disappointed.
The recipes in this book include: burgers, tacos, vegetable chips, pizza, pasta, soups, dips, dressings, salads, smoothies, juices, teas, cheescakes, pies, cookies...and they all look mouth-watering. Even my meat-eating boyfriend likes the look (and taste) of these delightful recipes. The recipes aren't complicated...they just require a little time and effort, which is common of raw living. They do require a dehydrator (you can pick one up for 30 bucks at Sears), a juicer, a blender and a saladacco (a spiral pasta maker for vegetables)...however if you're just starting out like me, you can use your oven at a very low heat with the door open to "dehydrate" foods to get used to it, you can use a cheese grater to make zucchini spaghetti.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in dabbling in raw food...it's extremely tasty, simple recipes and best of all good for you...I mean would you pass up the opportunity to eat "pizza" with a side of vegetable chips and a slice of cheesecake AND it be good for you AND taste delicious? Packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and goodness...Give it a whirl, I promise you won't be disappointed.

The Raw Gourmet Review

Whether you're just looking to add more fruits and vegetables into your food program, are transitioning into becoming vegetarian or going more into raw foods, this is THE book for you.
It's got great photos, sections on; the basics including a guide to using the book and ten raw food kitchen essentials so you can prepare a meal within 20 minutes of arriving home; breakfast; juices and blended drinks; fundamental flavors including soups, sauces, dressings, etc.; entrees and desserts. There is a section on sprouting, food combining, a 3-week menu plan; special occasion menu suggestions, sources and grocery guide.
In the grocery guide, Nomi explains foods which some people may not be familiar with and what they may be used for. Most of the ingredients are common and familiar to most people or, if not, can be substituted for those that are.
In the sources section, she tells where to get many of the ingredients included in the recipes. Living in California, I've found I can get most of the ingredients at my local "natural" (many of the foods I wouldn't classify as natural) foods store, but for someone living far from these sources, it's nice to know where to go. I and my friends have purchased from a couple of these places and found the service and quality of foods to be excellent.
I would suggest that if you don't have one, the minimum to get to assist in making many of these recipes is a good food processor and a good blender. You can always upgrade as you become more creative. Nomi also lists sources for dehydrators, juicers and blenders. I purchased the ones she recommends before I knew about this book and I agree with her assessments.
Nomi was introduced to raw foods over 10 years ago by a holistic physician. At first she was eating about 50% of her foods raw and eventually became sincere about eat raw foods. She "said good-bye" to fibromyalgia, hypoglycemia, mood swings, allergic sinusitis, digestive disorders, including acid reflux and candida. You can see why she is a raw foods advocate.
If you're looking for a good, all-purpose book, I highly recommend The Raw Gourmet by Nomi Shannon

This book was a great help as I started out on my raw adventures. It contains a number of easy to follow recipes which have become staples in my diet. My only problem with this book is that the table of contents is not intuitive making it hard to refer back to recipes. You need to remember that the name of that Kale dish you like is "Disappearing Kale" and won't be found in the index under K but D. If the author does a second edition PLEASE make finding recipes easier! Thanks. Note: This book has no pictures (for that try The Raw Gourmet by Nomi Shannon which is excellent). You should also be aware that many of the recipes call for the use of a food dehydrator which is a great machine but not cheap.

WARNING: The raw food recipes in this book are so delicious they may change your life! The phrase 'raw foods' conjures up images of food as punishment—think uncooked carrots and celery, with perhaps a spinach juice cocktail as a chaser. However, uncooked doesn't have to mean unappetizing, as this combination cookbook and guide to the raw foods lifestyle shows. Gabrielle Chavez explains how to use the wide range of fruits, nuts, grains, vegetables, spices, and seasonings for delicious, healthful—and healing—dishes. Anytime entrees from Stuffed Portabellos with Mushroom Gravy to Thai Hazelnut Pesto are here, along with seasonal treats like Halloween Soup and basics such as Simple Sweet Bread, with ingredients expressed in both metric and American measurements. In addition to current information on raw foods' nutritional value and success as an alternative for people with food allergies and disorders, The Raw Food Gourmet takes readers on Chavez's personal journey as she discovers the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of this diet.
