More Best Recipes (America's Test Kitchen) Review

More Best Recipes (America's Test Kitchen)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Those of you who complain about Cooks Illustrated's habit of redundant recipes between books, look elsewhere. Literally everything in this book is a rehash; I'm about to explain why this isn't necessarily a bad thing, and why CI fans probably don't need this book anyway.
This book is exactly as advertised: the best stuff from the last five years or so of the magazine. A lot of this stuff has been covered in the TV show books; for that, you want the 10th anniversary book, especially if you haven't bothered with ordering the last two years directly from the publisher or never got the first edition of The Best Recipe (where the first season was documented). And diligent collectors of the Best Recipe series will have all or most of these recipes anyway (some stuff, like Pizza Bianca or Almost No-Knead Bread, has as far as I know only appeared in the TV books and the magazine). But for the most part, this is a book for people who are just getting into the whole Cooks Illustrated thing -- something to be bought as a set with The New Best Recipe.
It does adopt a bit of the informality in some of the later Best Recipe books, showing recipes in part as problem domains as recipes in and of themselves. And chances are a lot of the recipes are just the sort of things you want collected all in one place like this. On its own it's worth the 4 stars; it just has a bit of a limited audience compared to some of its seriesmates. Get it for a new cook, or for someone who's just woken up to the geek side of the kitchen. But if you've been collecting CI books as long as I have, it probably isn't for you.

Fruits of the Midwest - A Cookbook and Guide from Harvest to Table Review

Fruits of the Midwest - A Cookbook and Guide from Harvest to Table
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have spent New Years Day happily reading this wonderful book cover to cover. It was a true delight to imagine a summer day with the vivid colors and heady scents of the freshest fruit while pure white snow was just outside my window. I love this book!
Debbie has practical, clear tips for selecting, handling and storing fruit. There is such a variety of recipes with simple and direct instructions. With the addition of fresh apples, frozen or canned fruit, most of the ingredients are already in my pantry. I am able to have summer tastes on my table tonight!
The book is thoughtfully laid out with special hints and tips on the same page where needed. Debbie tells you the differences in varieties of the same fruit, and then writes what works best for her. She tells you what her family prefers as well as valid reasons why others may prefer a different texture or sweetness or way of preserving the fruit. Convenient tabs mark the beginning of each new section. She has valuable lists of substitutions and equivalents.
The photo of Debbie's grandmother on the cover of her book could be my own grandmother or great grandmother and evokes warm, sweet memories for me. It is a "feel-good" book. There is something in here for everyone!
Tonight's dessert will be Debbie's "Hurry-up Apple Dumplings".
Thank you, Debbie, for sharing your wisdom and wealth of information. This will be a treasured and well-used cook book!

Food Drying at Home The Natural Way, with over 300 Healthful and Delicious Recipes Review

Food Drying at Home The Natural Way, with over 300 Healthful and Delicious Recipes

I got this book, hoping it would have ideas and tips for drying food without a dehydrator. I don't currently have one, and I wanted to be able to dry foods in my oven or outside. I was a little disappointed at first, but the author makes some very valid points about buying a good dehydrator. I'm looking for a good dehydrator now, but the good ones (stainless steel) alas are currently a bit much for my budget currently. Maybe in the near future. Once I get one, I'm sure this book will be wonderful, but right now, this book is just going on the bookshelf.

The Sweet Truth: A Sugar-Free / Wheat-Free Kitchen Review

The Sweet Truth: A Sugar-Free / Wheat-Free Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author provides a list of "must have" ingredients to always have on hand - but most all of the recipes call for items that are not on the list and these items are not run-of-the-mill grocery store stock. Many of the recipes seem to be quite involved. For example, the chocolate chip cookie recipes not only involve mixing the dough - but also require freezing the cookies on the cookie sheets for 30 minutes before baking. I don't know about you, but I don't have that much freezer space. When the author tells me to pull out my dehydrater to prepare fruit for her recipes, I put the book aside. I am not a professional cook. I need good recipes that don't consume a lot of time to make and that are practical. These recipes may produce great food, if you have hours to devote to the process. The book is expensive compared to others, so unless you have a lot of time and close proximity to a natural foods market, I would not invest in it.

Gifts Cooks Love: Recipes for Giving Review

Gifts Cooks Love: Recipes for Giving
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With all sorts of recipes and gift ideas you better believe these are Gifts Cooks Love. The recipes range from the savory, Rustic Rosemary Parmesan Crackers, and onion marmalade, to making your own olive oil and herb-cured albacore tuna for tuna salad-I can hardly wait to try this one out. Let's not forget the sweet gifts, jams and preserves, candied apples, biscotti, Mexican hot chocolate and double fudge brownie pops.
Scrumptious is the word that comes to mind. I have yet to make anything from the book. There will be plenty of recipes that I will try out. In perusing the book, the recipes all seem quite easy with readily available ingredients and instructions that have wonderful cooking tips. My only criticism is I found one recipe that called for corn syrup. I am the enemy of corn syrup. It is the cheapest cooking ingredient around with evil lurking about-just think fat. Unhealthy and unnatural.
That said, I am rather enticed by the thought of making dried porcini mushrooms and panforte.
What I believe that sets this book apart from other gift giving recipe books is the the presentation of the final product and ideas for gift baskets. You could give someone a smores basket, making your own chocolate, graham crackers and marshmallows, or how about an Italian basket, with pasta, sauce and mushrooms.

Raw Fusion: Better Living Through Living Foods Review

Raw Fusion: Better Living Through Living Foods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can so relate to what the author states: "Food has always been a huge part of my life: if the raw food diet were boring or tasteless, there is no way that I would have stuck with this lifestyle." The author has an advanced degree in psychology, and through interviews with raw foodies has learned that nearly everyone benefits psychologically from the diet. They gain more self-confidence, self-awareness, self-control, and self-respect. In addition, diseases can be prevented and even reversed. All of this motivated her to write this book and share this great health secret with the world.
This book is a wonderful introduction to the raw life, and even though I have read several dozen books on the raw diet (writing even two of them myself), I found myself learning new tricks, such as how to get the most from juicing, how to best dehydrate food, and how dehydrating food can actually save you money!)
What LindaJoy illustrates in this book, for all newbies scared to go raw, is that you can benefit so much by just going to a higher level of raw: "Raw Fusion is a hybrid of the best of the raw foods world, intermingled with an informed and conscious mainstream lifestyle. Individuals who find a high raw diet too limiting can find ways to integrate more variety into their meals without compromising nutrition. High raw foodists seeking healthy ways to add cooked foods into their diets will enjoy the versatility and variety of these tips. Families or individuals accustomed to more mainstream meals, but searching for tasty and convenient ways to increase their nutritional intake, will be surprised at how effortlessly one can fuse more raw ingredients into meals".
The four cornerstones of raw fusion, which the book details, include green smoothies, creative green-ing, the main meal salad, and raw desserts.
Raw Fusion covers all you need to know to get started on your raw, high raw, or "raw fusion" journey. You are taught how to equip our kitchen and pantry, how to properly combine foods for efficient digestion, all about superfoods, and the all important sprouting and soaking. This book will lead you to a world beyond cravings, an attitude of gratitude for your body, and how to cook lightly to avoid toxic byproducts from the heat. There is even an excerpt from my book that warns about how cooking has led to disease.
There are interviews with or essays by 15 other raw leaders.
What I love most about this book is that the author is too smart to get stuck in dogma. She realizes that people vary in their nutritional needs. While some do well on a vegan or vegetarian diet, others don't. She also warns about overeating carbohydrates and high glycemic treats, which is a common error in the raw food movement.
This is a great book for everyone on the road to raw! There is even a companion recipe book which is spiral bound.

I had the pleasure of meeting Carmella a few times and having extended conversations. She is an amazing, down to earth, realistic person. The last time I saw her, she had this book published. I own so so many Raw, Vegan, Paleo books but I have to say, this is at the top of the list. Its a no-frills, information packed book with plenty of easy and mouthwatering dishes (and color photos for almost every recipe). Who else has step by step recipes for Kombucha, KimChi and Irish Moss? Her blog, as well as Kristen-Suzanne's Raw Blog spot, are my favorites. Both down to earth ladies who primary goal is to deliver a lot of information to you (and not to sell you on their products and seminars.). If you purchase this book, you will not be disappointed.

The Raw Foods Resource Guide Review

The Raw Foods Resource Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just love this little book, and I wish I'd had it when I first started working toward a raw diet. Don't let it's little size fool you (about 6x8" - perfect stocking stuffer!). It's one of the most useful books on raw foods that I've ever read, despite it's having only 90 pages. Jeremy Saffron, author of The Fasting Handbook: Dining from an Empty Bowl, has mastered the art of saying a lot by saying very little. He chooses his topics with care and covers them succinctly and completely.
Let me tell you what you'll get out of this book besides a complete list of raw restaurants and food sources. He answers all the questions that I and many others asked as raw food newbies (and frankly were still wondering about), like "Is nutritional yeast really raw?" and "If you could give me a list of the top five foods to include in my diet, what would they be?" I especially liked his sections on travel, dehydrating, foraging, and culturing, and extras like Easy Indoor Gardening and Types of Raw Food Diets (Hydrorians? Who knew?).
This is THE perfect gift for someone considering adopting a raw food diet.

I like to car camp and I like to backpack too. But I don't like getting ready! So many details, so much planning. This book has excellent organizational tips and lists that streamline the process. The author's philosophy is that "less is more" and she shows how to make that work in any camping situation. I was pleasantly surprised, after 20 years of camping, to find many new ideas for making my pack lighter, my camp food more interesting, and my feet happier (many good tips for foot care). I was also amazed by the dozens of uses to be gained from a bandana, dental floss, and a nylon net. I just wish I had had this book 20 years ago!

This author did not waste one page of her book with uselss information. If you are interested in ntrition, eating healthy, and are toying with the idea of eating raw, this book is for you. The information is not overwhelming, and the author does not come across as a fanatic, but rather informs the reader of the diet's benefits, and motivates you to at least try this intriguing way of eating. This is probably the one book to really get the beginner started on becoming a raw foodist. There are a ton of resources in the book that makes this a must have for the raw food enthuiast as well as for the beginner. The Raw Food Diet Myth is a thought provoking exploration of the revolutionary philosophy of raw and living foods. Author and raw foodist Dr. Ruthann Russo proves that raw food is much more than a diet. She does this by bringing together an enjoyable and clear description of the food, lifestyle, treatment of the earth, each other and the quest for physical, spiritual and mental health within the raw food movement. In the section on Basics, you will read about the long and strong history of the raw food movement beginning with early leaders like physicians Max Bircher-Benner and Max Gerson to leaders of today like Dr. Gabriel Cousens and David Wolfe. In the Food section, Russo describes healthy conflict within the movement in chapters devoted completely to raw chocolate, raw sweeteners, and water. In the Lifestyle Russo delves into health, spirituality and physical fitness as well as ethics, economics, and even raw pets. The book provides you with worthwhile information to make a conscious decision about whether to incorporate any of the raw and living food philosophy into your own philosophy of living.

Raw Foods for Busy People: Simple and Machine-Free Recipes for Every Day

(More customer reviews)
Its very apparent that a lot of love went into making this book. The layout, additional info and resources are excellent and presented very clearly.
As a single guy with not a lot of free time I searched all over for a Raw Foods cookbook that I could use. This is the ONLY book I found that has things I'd eat, enjoy and are easy to make without exorbitant costs or prep times or weird ingredients.
Honestly after researching a lot of the Raw Foods books I figured the only people who could eat this way are housewives with a lot of money, I couldnt imagine anyone spending the time or wanting to eat a lot of the recipes in these other books.
After making many things from the book I can say that they fall into two categories-great or bland/too watery. Things like the cinnamon stewed apples, cashew cream, schezwan marinade, halvah shake, puddings and the dehydrator recipes are outstanding. Others like the gravy, curry apple marinade, tahini marinade, mashed potatoes and others are way too watery or lack flavor. I'd still rate this book 5 stars since theres no other raw cookbook like this but I think she needs to fine tune some of these recipes.
Would still highly reccomend it though. It was a big relief to get a practical book like this after my 1st purchase- Raw in Ten which was truly an awful raw book.

People spend most of their adult lives searching for the right program to lose weight. I was no different.
I had tried every diet imaginable. The "no carb diet", (my cholesterol jumped up 23 points), "pre-package food diet", ( I gained 8 lbs. as soon as I went back to normal eating), "liquid diet,(won't even address what happened with that diet). Anyway, you get the picture.
Then one day, a friend introduced "Essential Eating" to me. This book answered all my questions and provided me with the answers I needed to live healthy, lose 27 lbs. and keep it off.
This is a wonderful program with delicious and easy to make recipes. You cook with "real organic food".
And the best thing is that it is not a diet. It is a way of life. I no longer have digestive or health related problems and feel better than I have felt in ages.
Over 2 years ago, I dropped 2 dress sizes, I dine out, have dinner parties and haven't gained a pound back.
Thank Essential Eating for changing my life.

Eating Without Heating: Favorite Recipes from Teens Who Love Raw Food Review

Eating Without Heating: Favorite Recipes from Teens Who Love Raw Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book "Eating Without Heating", written by two
teens, displays wisdom beyond their years.
The book is magnificently illustrated with drawings by Valya.
"Eating Without Heating is a guide book to all things raw.
It is a treatise on the raw food philosophy. It is a cookbook.
It is a living testament to a family that bucked the school
establishment which tried to induce children to drink milk
and eat fast-food burgers for lunch. Their recipes are quite
a bit more sophisticated than just sliced cucumbers with dill
sauce. One example is an entire chapter on fermenting foods.
Sergei and Valya simply soak one cup of nuts in water overnight
and blend the resulting product in a blender until it is
smooth like heavy cream. They strain the mixture through
a sprout bag, pour into a jar, cover with cheesecloth,
and set in a warm place where the magic transfer of gases
and air through the mixture produces a tart yogurt-like
food. Try this with cashews and chopped mango.
They produce unique cheeses with the same method as
above. I'll soon be trying their sauerkraut and kim chee
recipes. I salivate at the thought of producing my own.
I've tasted raw breads, but have only wondered at the
mastery of culinary skills necessary to create such miracles.
From sprouted raw flax bread with kamut and walnuts to
chili corn chips, the Boutenko children make it all
seem simple, in easy-to-follow recipes. If you love
sourdough bread, you've got to try their recipe which
employs raw almond pulp with flax and caraway seeds.
These kids have timing! They save the best for last,
cookies, ice creams, and cakes. With secrets learned
from their mother (sprinkle coconut or nuts so that
the cake does not stick to the pan), and photographs
that tempt and delight (walnut cream cake, un-chocolate
cake, un-cheesecake, and many others), these recipes
are what one would expect to be served at the gates
of Valhalla. Try the Macadamia Date Pie or the
amazing Coconut-Date Truffles.

I wish there were some way that I could get this message out to every single one of you. A message that would touch your lives and have you see that happiness is not sold in little baggies or a 40 oz. glass bottle. I wish that there were some way to show you, my own generation, that we can all be happy and free without drugs. I wish I could stop you from hurting your body and make you see how much you will regret it later in life. Most of all I wish that I could unite all of you and show you that every single one of you is beautiful and miraculous and that life would not be the same without you. Unfortunately, that is impossible, because the only way of teaching is actually not teaching at all! The only way I can get others to follow is by being a good example and sharing my story when asked. The words of even the wisest man are worth nothing if no one wants to hear them!

I find it odd that there are not more reviews of this book. Dorit has developed wonderful recipes that are easy and taste great. They are not the ones you see in all the other books.
