The Sweet Truth: A Sugar-Free / Wheat-Free Kitchen Review

The Sweet Truth: A Sugar-Free / Wheat-Free Kitchen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author provides a list of "must have" ingredients to always have on hand - but most all of the recipes call for items that are not on the list and these items are not run-of-the-mill grocery store stock. Many of the recipes seem to be quite involved. For example, the chocolate chip cookie recipes not only involve mixing the dough - but also require freezing the cookies on the cookie sheets for 30 minutes before baking. I don't know about you, but I don't have that much freezer space. When the author tells me to pull out my dehydrater to prepare fruit for her recipes, I put the book aside. I am not a professional cook. I need good recipes that don't consume a lot of time to make and that are practical. These recipes may produce great food, if you have hours to devote to the process. The book is expensive compared to others, so unless you have a lot of time and close proximity to a natural foods market, I would not invest in it.

Rawmazing Easy Raw Food Review

Wonderful tempting recipes. However, after receiving the book I discovered that the photos of the dishes are in black and white. This was very disappointing. My inspiration to duplicate the dishes diminished since I couldn't preview the end result. After all, it was the amazing color photo on the cover that hooked me into reviewing and then purchasing the book in the first place. My opinion is if they aren't able to include color photos, they aught to leave them out altogether.

Dr. Mercola's Total Health Cookbook & Program: 150 Delicious Grain-Free Recipes & Proven Metabolic Type Plan to Prevent Disease, Optimize Weight and Live Longer Review

Dr. Mercola's Total Health Cookbook and Program: 150 Delicious Grain-Free Recipes and Proven Metabolic Type Plan to Prevent Disease, Optimize Weight and Live Longer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has much information about healthy diet, lifestyle and medicine. Dr. Mercola pointed out in a recent talk we attended in Philadelphia that the third leading cause of death for Americans was --doctors. Sorry, doc, but iatrogenic (doctor-caused) complications are plentiful. Still, this statistic may be misleading as a lot of doctoring goes on in the expensive, last few months of life for terminally-ill and geriatric patients. So the number of complications due to procedures and drug interactions is possibly skewed here--if you read the medicare reports and read between the lines.
STILL, I prefer prevention. Dr. Mercola is a sort of Dr. Weil for the millenium, similar advice, more detail and his own slant on diet and health. Essentially, he advises vegetables, low to no grains--reduces insulin fluctuations, and healthy meats. He insists most people find that they are not served well by a vegan (no milk, meat, egg) diet and actually it could harm them. Yes, some folks are more than well on a vegan diet; it depends on your metabolic type, according to Mercola. For many, meat or fish are important. This is the "Atkins" type diet with an emphasis on healthy choices.
We liked a lot of the recipes in this book. Some were even delicious; "zucchini spaghetti" is a boon for the low-carb eater, thin strips of squash serve as a low-carb base for a tasty sauce. And a home-made sausage patty I liked, plus a spicy Jamaican rub for chicken or fish.
The recipes in "Total Health" are for the most part, pretty easy. The ingredients are what's more difficult to come by--for example, free range poultry, bison (buffalo), raw milk and Alaskan salmon, tested free of detectible mercury. But even in our rural area, we can order bison and salmon to be shipped in, and the raw milk is available over the border in Amish country. So while not every area in the US can obtain organic veggies and meats by walking to the store, even remote areas can find ways to get these items. If you were to adhere to the Mercola diet, a chest freezer could be helpful to freeze sporadic purchases of organic perishables.
How to get in those vegetables for brekkie really stumped us, until we tried the fearsome green shake, consisting of vegetable juice, whey powder, egg and greens powder, with coconut for flavor and its own benefits. This powerful smoothie is a quick pick-me-up for the morning rush and easily assimilated. We liked it, surprised how much so.
This diet and lifestyle is not easy, and the guy at home frankly said "No WAY am I eating veggies for a snack, thank YOU very much!" but adding the additional greens and of course healthy choices is doing us good, we are sure. A provocative book, with a great number of resources.

I was introduced to this book by a deciple of Ann Wigmore, who was teaching a class in living foods. After a short time on the diet I was able to stop taking my hypo-thyrodism medication forever. The book is recommended as a great starter in uncooked foods, as it is inexpensive and gives the theory behind the recipes. Chapter titles: 1) AN APPLE A DAY OR HAVE IT YOUR WAY, 2) LET FOOD BE YOUR MEDICINE, 3) THE SECRET OF HEALTH, 4) KEEPING YOUR BODY CLEAN, 5) THE HIPPOCRATES DIET, 6) INDOOR GARDENING FOR BEGINNERS, 7) SUPER NUTRITION FROM SPROUTS, 8) WHEATGRASS MIRACLES, 9) APPLES AND ORANGES AREN'T THE SAME, 10) HIPPOCRATES DIET RECIPES, 11)THE HIPPOCRATES DIET AND WEIGHT LOSS.

This volume presents a diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts, all of which is prepared without cooking, and which allows the body to regain its strength and vigour gently. If you are looking for excellent raw cuisine, or if you are interested in great vegan recipes, try this book. Having experimented with both for 20 years, I find this book to be among the best in either genre. Almost every recipe I've tried is truly noteworthy, but the living foods recipes stand out as both delicious and easy to prepare. Highly recommended -- by someone who is not big on angels, but who loves to eat well, and hates a lot of prep.

Super Cleanse: Detox Your Body for Long-Lasting Health and Beauty Review

Super Cleanse: Detox Your Body for Long-Lasting Health and Beauty
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Super Cleanse is the best book I've ever read or used on cleansing. It is packed with truly delicious recipes for juices and cleansing foods that one can use to cleanse or to also easily incorporate into everyday living. The author makes the process fun and easy. I did the Urban Revitalizer cleanse after being overworked by ongoing business travel, depleted and hooked on coffee and sugar. It was completely amazing. I enjoyed the cleanse more than any other I have ever done because the recipes were delicious, nutritious and sustaining. I lost @ 7 pounds, got off a multiple latte a day habit and felt energized, serene and better than I had in a long time. After studying natural medicine, attending nutrition school and working at a popular vitamin company for the past 10 years, I have read many books on cleansing. This is truly the most useful, inspiring and health promoting cleansing book I have ever read. I highly recommend it for anyone that is interested in cleansing, great tasting healthy recipes or increasing their overall health!

The Raw Food Primer Review

The Raw Food Primer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having read literally DOZENS of great raw foods books, (as a raw foods nutrition specialist, I have to know this subject, backwards and forwards,) I must say, I was underwhelmed. This book just simply is NOT a raw foods primer, as the title states, but the "artist's" self-promotion.
A primer would teach basic raw foods techniques. You'd be better off with Steve Meyerowitz' Sproutman's Kitchen Garden Cookbook. At least you'd learn how to sprout, how to juice, how to dehydrate, etc. This book assumes you already know that.
A primer would teach basic recipes. You'd be better off with Rhio's Hooked on Raw. At least you'd have dozens upon dozens of simple, basic recipes you could go home and fix up for dinner TONIGHT.
All this book is, is several pages the "artist's" ART work, and a few pages of boring, overly-complicated froo-froo cuisine.
This is NOT a primer. It's showing off.

Forget everything you have been taught about eating raw. This is not a boring book about bland salads and munching on carrot sticks for breakfast lunch and dinner —The Raw Food Primer is filled with fifty delicious, easy-to-follow recipes that are sure to make your tummy growl.Eating is more than just taking nutrients in. It's also pleasure, communion, and the taste of life. With the blossoming of raw food as an artistic cuisine, eating is also about discovering intense natural flavors and enticing high palate food lovers to explore new/old ways to eat. As the raw food movement enters the culinary mainstream, Chef Alex is right here to help with The Raw Food Primer as a starter kit. Those who try these succulent recipes will enjoy deep comfort, great nutrition, and fresh paths to glowing health. For many, raw food is already a way of life. But when we try to explain it to friends, family or students who don't yet know the pleasures and the benefits of eating "raw", they may say, "You can't keep up your energy with raw carrots" or "Yuck! That sounds really boring" or "I can't give up my pasta!" To answer such remarks, Chef Alex has written The Raw Food Primer. She gently introduces "first timers" to the concept of raw foods and a vegetarian diet. Encouraging them to add raw food slowly to their diet, she avoids a zealous approach that may frighten off people curious about "uncooking" but not quite ready to give raw cuisine a full embrace. With her charming, low-pressure style, Ferrara eases the reader into true eagerness to try tasty raw dishes and reap the health benefits like more energy. Many people who have gone raw report that they have a leaner structure, clearer skin and eyes, and they no longer experience problems with allergies or fatigue. The Raw Food Primer is perfect for curious students of this revolutionary food experience or the more experienced raw foodist — or anyone who merely appreciates delicious food.

Living Cuisine: The Art and Spirit of Raw Foods (Avery Health Guides) Review

Living Cuisine: The Art and Spirit of Raw Foods (Avery Health Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A wonderful addition to the growing raw-foods cookbook list! This is a delightfully written, very engaging book that would be an excellent introduction for anyone interested in a living foods lifestyle.
The first half of the book is a compilation of information, from advice and the benefits of going raw to a comprehensive list of foods, tools and techniques. Very useful for the beginner (even veteran raw foodists might learn a thing or two).
The second part of the book consists of Renee's delicious vegan recipes (no animal products or dairy). Everything I have tried is tasty, elegant and nicely balanced and her desserts are outrageous!
Unlike Trotter and Klein's wonderful but complex "Raw", the offerings here are very easy to assemble. My one complaint is that many of the side notes and paragraph headings are printed in very pale gray. The lack of contrast makes these very difficult to read... it's a design flaw but doesn't diminish the overall quality of the book.
As a raw chef, myself, I think Renee has done a masterful job of creating a book that will appeal to everyone. Simple, straight forward and delicious. There is a real sense of love and joy that pervades this book. Highly recommended!!
Bon appetit!

This is an amazing followup to their excellent 'I am Grateful' book. I have been eating raw foods for over 20 years, and live with my husband and kids who don't follow a raw food diet. We all agree these are the best desserts we have ever tasted. I have seen many raw food deserts from many books, but these set a new standard for raw chefs everywhere. Eating the tiramasu and the cheesecakes almost made time stop! I suggest you make these desserts when you have nothing pressing on your agenda, because you may just forget everything else.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Eating Raw
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've got 3 other raw food books. I like this one the best. Not alot of hype. I appreciate that. It is written for idiots...begins by explaining the benefits of going raw. I'd been raw for a month prior to reading this book, but the motivation to continue was good.
Step by step instructions for soaking and sprouting methods (easy to follow chart included). I was too timid to attempt this process til I read this book. Way easy. My kitchen is sproutin' right now.

Recipes with easy to find ingredients is important. I've got to prepare food for 5 s.a.d. enthusiasts so I don't have alot of time or cash to fool around with. This book's got the recipes I can use. The live oatmeal recipe was easy to prepare and delish! It touches a couple of times on this or that being gluten free, which is vital for me. It clued me into nama shoyu...major gluten goin' on. Thanks, it sucks to have a recipe picked out and find out at the grocery store while reading a label that I can't have that specific thing. So, I run around putting the other ingredients back on the shelf coz that recipe's a wash! Another thing, Idiot's Guide tells you exactly what needs to be soaked for any given recipe. I ruined a recipe from another book because it didn't tell me to soak $12.00 worth of almonds. I had to go on you tube to watch other people explain it before one of them finally mentioned that they needed to be soaked. I was bummed. This book helps me not screw things up.

Idiot's Guide has great insider tips on kitchen appliances...wish I'd have read this before I bought my dehydrator, blender, food processor, and juicer. The dehydrator to buy is the Excalibur. The hours it saves in dehydrating time due to its design is crazy! Now I'm bummed with my cheapy Walmart one. There are alot of chip, cracker, and bread recipes I can't make very well without the good dehydrator. The recipes are found in other books not just this one, so it's not a negative against this book. The dehydrating chart is helpful, as well. I like how Idiot's Guide explains why you have increased temps at the beginning of some dehydrations and not others, and why it is still considered raw at these temps. Also, a Champion brand juicer is the one recommended by all raw foodists I've read from. This book explains very simply the differences in how they work and therefore why Champion is the brand recommended.

Basically, the book imparts alot of knowledge, little tips and info on nutition without being too sciencey. It defines some of the raw foodist lexicon. It's like having a friend explain lots of little facts as well as some biggies, in a fun to read manner. I'd buy it again if I didn't already own it!
