The Northwest Herb Lover's Handbook: A Guide to Growing Herbs for Cooking, Crafts, and Home Remedies Review

The Northwest Herb Lover's Handbook: A Guide to Growing Herbs for Cooking, Crafts, and Home Remedies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is Mary Preus' second book about herbs. The first, "Growing Herbs", covered the basics but was limited in scope. This book expands on the first, guiding the reader deeper into the world of herbs as well as describing 50 of the best-known herbs in detail. While the book is focussed on growing herbs in the Pacific Northwest, it would be a useful book for herb lovers anywhere.
The writer was for 20 years owner of the Silver Bay Herb Farm in Washington State. In the first 80 pages of the book she shares her extensive knowledge of herb growing basics and of using herbs for cooking, healing and crafts. She includes plenty of recipes that are both imaginative and practical. In this section also she explains how to plan and build different types of herb gardens, and how to harvest and preserve herbs.
Most of the book, however, is a detailed look at 50 species of herbs. The writer includes information about planting, propagation, pets and diseases, harvesting and uses for cooking, healing and crafts. I particularly liked the information about the chemical elements found in each species and their value in balanced healing and a healthy diet.
This is a thoughtfully written book from a knowledgeable and experienced herb gardener. The book ends with a calendar of seasonal tasks in the herb garden, a list of the herb gardens open in the region, sources for plants and seeds, and publications and societies of interest to herb gardeners.

Handbook of Natural Gas Transmission and Processing Review

Handbook of Natural Gas Transmission and Processing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
****
"We suddenly have over a one hundred year supply of natural gas at current consumption rates and that number has been growing by about one decade more each year since 2005." If the above quotation is confirmed, Peak gas era is just unfolding, and it pays to learn the best technology to push its energy share up from 24% which helps slowing global warming. Since my initiation in gas processing, when gas discoveries boomed following the energy crunch in mid seventies, I kept updating through articles written by gas engineering experts, that addressed technical advances and proven industrial processes. The consolidation of technical solutions for NGL as a potential energy supply at the outbreak of the twenty first century, required engineers and technologists in the gas industry to seek an integrated fresh assessment of the developing technology. The problem was that such handbooks become outdated more frequently, even with gas technology advanced and processes optimized.
The HBK authors combine expertise in different aspects of natural gas industry; processing, treatment, and transmission, starting with NG fundamentals, a large scoop on pricing, and chapters on automation, simulation, environmental aspects, complemented with profitability and gas project management. It seems a hard task to address the whole range of handbook user's expectations; according to its definition: a manual of NG facts, a reference on a fast developing technology, to which I may add, promote good engineering practice, in this case. The HBK may have satisfied most of the above criteria, but endorsed also an instruction role of a gas technology textbook.
The information assembled for such undertaking is voluminous, and its preparation and editing can be overwhelming, but this is how it ultimately acquires a distinction of a hand book. It is clear that some subjects treatment (as multiphase flow & coalescers) are exhaustive, and the sources timely, but the editors kept interrupting the explanation text with source references, (author and year) for up to a dozen times in some pages, where just a number was enough. Imagine that the reference list on raw gas transmission exceeded 15 pages!
Now, while the coverage of phase separation is very thorough, acid gas treating did not give the licensed processes enough attention, let alone a proper comparative study, the one page process selection (with no selection charts, necessary as screening tools) became ineffective for initial selection of potential process choices. Generally, physical properties charts are clear, but some pricing charts are tedious to follow (2-8, -9, -10). A standardized PFDs for process flow charts is lacking, with a mixture of an odd collection of manufacturer drawings.
You also encounter some mistakes and few odd chemical equations that need correction. The text editing and presentation needs a face lift. Block flow diagrams are neglected, except once (fig 4-1). BFDs help in perception of gas processes' overall conceptual approach, that is missing from all related chapters (6-10).
This HBK has many strong points, its coverage is extensive, but is compromised by many petty details and bug references, and a lack of efficient creative presentation.

High Trail Cookery: All-Natural, Home-Dried, Palate-Pleasing Meals for the Backpacker Review

High Trail Cookery: All-Natural, Home-Dried, Palate-Pleasing Meals for the Backpacker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was interested in this book because it advertised recipes for making your own dehydrated foods. But this book misses the point of wilderness tripping. The fact is most backcountry hikers want foods that can be mixed and matched as desired. All the recipes call for complex proteins such as eggs, milk, yogurt, meat that are prepared as a full meal (e.g., ham omelets) and then dehydrated. Because the egg and the ham are all mushed up with spices you can hardly choose to use the eggs in pancakes and the ham in chili stew. Instead, you must eat omelets. When I backpack I plan on dehydrating several basic goods: canned beans, green peppers, hamburger, etc. Then along with some common staples such as powdered eggs, flour, etc. I can vary my cooking as desired. This book has you cooking complex gourmet meals, dehydrating them and then eating exactly that on the trail.ALso, I don't know why the author would bother to dehydrate things such as eggs, yogurt, etc. One can easily buy powdered eggs and besides - have you ever tried dehyrating your own eggs? Your house will smell like a sewer! Finally, the book contains numerous recipes for muffins and breads. But all are prepared and baked at home. I have plenty of these recipes in my Joy of Cooking. What I would have been interested in is how to prepare such recipes infront of a campfire - but the author makes no mention of this.

Rita Romano talks intelligently and to the point on how to eat healthy. For a reader that doesn't know the first thing about eating raw foods, how to start, what's good for them and what's bad, this book is exceptional. It is well laid out and is chock full of information. My profuse thanks to Rita - I had always wished, reading book after book, that someone would write a no-nonsense practical book that explained things start to finish in an informative and easy-to-understand manner. "Dining in the Raw" does. There really is not a wasted page in the book - anyone buying this book gets their money's worth.

Never Be Fat Again: The 6-Week Cellular Solution to Permanently Break the Fat Cycle Review

Never Be Fat Again: The 6-Week Cellular Solution to Permanently Break the Fat Cycle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Awesome! I give this book ten stars. Never Be Fat Again has got to be the best book on weight control ever written. I keep going on diets and the pounds keep coming back. For so many years I have tried to lose weight only to lose and regain the same 25 pounds over and over while gaining more weight every year. For the first time I now understand why diets don't work, and how to lose weight permanently. This book teaches you why you can't lose weight permanently by trying to lose weight. Excess weight is only a symptom of this disease, and you can't cure the disease by treating the symptom. The author, an MIT-trained scientist, identifies the causes of this disease, which, much to my surprise, include common environmental toxins. Armed with this knowledge, I am reversing the causes that created my weight in the first place. In just six weeks, I have lost 15 pounds without feeling deprived and eating as much as I like. In fact, I have more energy, sleep better and feel better than I have in years. All I did is cut out the processed foods and artificial sweeteners and get on the recommended supplement program. Never Be Fat Again is different from anything else out there on the market. It is clearly written and easy to read, but best of all, a scientifically-sound solution to excess weight. I highly recommend it. The chapter on sugar alone is worth the price of the book.

Fight Fat at Its TrueSource . . . Your Cells.

An M.I.T.-Trained Scientist Explains the ONE Secret You Need to Know to Lose Weight and Keep It Off.

Raymond Francis is the scientist people turn to when diets don't work. His groundbreaking approach treats excess weight for what it reall y is--a disease caused by malfunctioning cells. As Francis explains, many of the foods we eat every day, especially the 'health' and 'diet' ones we dutifully buy to lose weight, have the oppositeeffect . Full of hidden toxins and lacking nutrients, they actually poison your cells and alter your weight-control genes, causing your body to put on the pounds. Like he's done for thousands of other people, Raymond Francis can help you turn this fat cycle around and reclaim your waistline--and your health.

His simple yet scientifically supported plan will have you looking and feeling better than you have in years-- in just six weeks. You'll discover:

Which low-fat and no-fat products actually make you fatter

How one missing nutrient can signal your body to store fat

Which food additives are most toxic--and how to spot them on a label

The 'Big 4' worst foods to eat--with delicious and nutritious alternatives

How to sneak more fiber- and nutrient-rich foods into your day

Plus, delicious recipes for meals and snacks and week-by-week to-do lists to keep you on track

Keeping the Harvest: Preserving Your Fruits, Vegetables and Herbs (Down-to-Earth Book) Review

Keeping the Harvest: Preserving Your Fruits, Vegetables and Herbs (Down-to-Earth Book)
Average Reviews:

I bought three books on canning and this book was the best. It is simple to understand, has pictures of the way things should look, such as the canning jars in a not water bath. I was canning tomatos and this book was so easy to follow. It listed the different methods for canning, as stating the best method.
I bought a pressure cooker and could not understand the manufactures directions, this book explained in simple terms, everything I needed to know, to use the pressure cooker. It has pictures on how to can tomatos from start to finish, which I really appreciated. To me a picture is worth a thousand words.
I think if you are a first time canner or even experienced, that this easy to use book is for you. I know I will be using it for years to come. Thank you to the authors.

Dr. Mercola's Total Health Cookbook & Program: 150 Delicious Grain-Free Recipes & Proven Metabolic Type Plan to Prevent Disease, Optimize Weight and Live Longer Review

Dr. Mercola's Total Health Cookbook and Program: 150 Delicious Grain-Free Recipes and Proven Metabolic Type Plan to Prevent Disease, Optimize Weight and Live Longer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has much information about healthy diet, lifestyle and medicine. Dr. Mercola pointed out in a recent talk we attended in Philadelphia that the third leading cause of death for Americans was --doctors. Sorry, doc, but iatrogenic (doctor-caused) complications are plentiful. Still, this statistic may be misleading as a lot of doctoring goes on in the expensive, last few months of life for terminally-ill and geriatric patients. So the number of complications due to procedures and drug interactions is possibly skewed here--if you read the medicare reports and read between the lines.
STILL, I prefer prevention. Dr. Mercola is a sort of Dr. Weil for the millenium, similar advice, more detail and his own slant on diet and health. Essentially, he advises vegetables, low to no grains--reduces insulin fluctuations, and healthy meats. He insists most people find that they are not served well by a vegan (no milk, meat, egg) diet and actually it could harm them. Yes, some folks are more than well on a vegan diet; it depends on your metabolic type, according to Mercola. For many, meat or fish are important. This is the "Atkins" type diet with an emphasis on healthy choices.
We liked a lot of the recipes in this book. Some were even delicious; "zucchini spaghetti" is a boon for the low-carb eater, thin strips of squash serve as a low-carb base for a tasty sauce. And a home-made sausage patty I liked, plus a spicy Jamaican rub for chicken or fish.
The recipes in "Total Health" are for the most part, pretty easy. The ingredients are what's more difficult to come by--for example, free range poultry, bison (buffalo), raw milk and Alaskan salmon, tested free of detectible mercury. But even in our rural area, we can order bison and salmon to be shipped in, and the raw milk is available over the border in Amish country. So while not every area in the US can obtain organic veggies and meats by walking to the store, even remote areas can find ways to get these items. If you were to adhere to the Mercola diet, a chest freezer could be helpful to freeze sporadic purchases of organic perishables.
How to get in those vegetables for brekkie really stumped us, until we tried the fearsome green shake, consisting of vegetable juice, whey powder, egg and greens powder, with coconut for flavor and its own benefits. This powerful smoothie is a quick pick-me-up for the morning rush and easily assimilated. We liked it, surprised how much so.
This diet and lifestyle is not easy, and the guy at home frankly said "No WAY am I eating veggies for a snack, thank YOU very much!" but adding the additional greens and of course healthy choices is doing us good, we are sure. A provocative book, with a great number of resources.

The Urban Homestead (Expanded & Revised Edition): Your Guide to Self-Sufficient Living in the Heart of the City (Process Self-reliance Series) Review

The Urban Homestead (Expanded and Revised Edition): Your Guide to Self-Sufficient Living in the Heart of the City (Process Self-reliance Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've read various books on self-sufficiency in the past ten years, but this one is different. First, it doesn't tell you how to recreate a 19th-century homestead, which is beginning to seem to me like another version of faux chateaux, but which also is not going to work very well if it is not surrounded by other 19th-century homesteads. And it doesn't describe what you can do "some day" when you get your five acres and independence. Instead, it focuses on what you can do right now in your own city to become more self-sufficient and sustainable. That makes it unique.
The reviewer who said that this is not a compendium of how-tos is right. It is more of an idea book, although there are many references to sources of detailed info about, for instance, raising ducks. But the problem with other self-sufficiency books I have run across is precisely that they are NOT idea books--that they become absorbed with one particular way of growing food, for instance, or one particular way of heating your (19th-century farm) house. There is nothing about woodstoves or woodlots in here.
This is the first book on self-sufficiency I have seen that directly addresses the fear that underlies the desire many people have to become more independent of the economy--the fear of some apocalypse, social collapse, disaster, etc., which they here dub "when the zombies come." I loved that they use humor to address that fear. There is a LOT of humor in this book; it's almost worth reading just for that.
Other books on self-sufficiency focus on being isolated and seeing other people as the enemy. I read one that recommended you get a house in a dip that no one can see from the road. They'll tell you how much ammunition to squirrel away with your self-heating lasagne rations. This one tells you to get to know your neighbors, because there is strength not in isolation but in community, where we can trade not only stuff like food, but our skills. In that way, it is similar to Food Not Lawns, but much as I admire the ideas in that book, this one offers ideas that are much more doable, I think, for most people.
It is a bit strange that Amazon is bundling this book with Gardening When It Counts, since that book recommends using extra-wide spacing to grow vegetables in situations where you do not have irrigation, and space is a real problem when you are growing on a city lot. Gardening that is a bit more intensive works better in that situation. But Gardening When It Counts is good in the way it ranks veggies by growing difficulty.

This book is excellent. It may not have the largest number of recipes, but the ones it does have are well thought out, backpacker friendly, and just plain good. The book has a lot of variety too. Each recipe is organized into two parts, the pre-hike preparation (what to do at home) and then then a on-trail section. The authors have tried to simplify the on-trail requirements making meal time easier. The book emphasizes using standard ingrediants (no more expensive store bought freeze-dried stuff) and includes instructions for preserving (dehydrating) your own.

People spend most of their adult lives searching for the right program to lose weight. I was no different.
I had tried every diet imaginable. The "no carb diet", (my cholesterol jumped up 23 points), "pre-package food diet", ( I gained 8 lbs. as soon as I went back to normal eating), "liquid diet,(won't even address what happened with that diet). Anyway, you get the picture.
Then one day, a friend introduced "Essential Eating" to me. This book answered all my questions and provided me with the answers I needed to live healthy, lose 27 lbs. and keep it off.
This is a wonderful program with delicious and easy to make recipes. You cook with "real organic food".
And the best thing is that it is not a diet. It is a way of life. I no longer have digestive or health related problems and feel better than I have felt in ages.
Over 2 years ago, I dropped 2 dress sizes, I dine out, have dinner parties and haven't gained a pound back.
Thank Essential Eating for changing my life.

If you are looking for real information on homesteading, this is NOT the book. At best the information is very general and almost worthless.
The author has information on buying food from CSAs, Co-ops,and farmers markets. How about more info on growing your own food. There's nothing on raising beef or pork.
In the section on dairy goats, she speaks about the breed La Mancha, yet the photo is NOT a LaMancha. The goat in the photo has ears, La Manchas don't have ears. Also although goats will eat some grass, they are poor grazers.
In the section of llamas there is a least one photo of alpacas.
In the sheep section, the author tells the reader to milk a sheep you must pull the sheep up to the fence so it can't get away, then she has you milking the animal from the front. What? I have all these animals, plus more. That's not even close to how milking is done.
I don't need a homesteading book to tell me how to hang wallpaper, or how to use Feng Shui to decorate my home.
The photos used for growing in a greenhouse are greenhouses that none of us can afford to buy. The same with the chapter on energy and the photos for solar panels and wind turbines.
Where's the info on building with recycled material?
This is a book for yuppies with lots of money who want to play "homestead."

This author does not know what she is writing about. There are many more worthwhile books out there.
