I LOVE this book! It has more than I ever expected, including recipes. The recipes have really helped, since I wasn't sure how to cook with dried fruit and veggies. It has opened up lots of great, new ideas of things I can dry in my dehydrator, and other great uses such as crafts, breadmaking, and yogurt making. I can't wait to try out the section on pet treats!

The Fruits and Greens Diet: A 10 Step Guide for a Lifetime of Dietary Health Review

The Fruits and Greens Diet: A 10 Step Guide for a Lifetime of Dietary Health
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book was an easy read- I got through it in one evening. It contains a lot of great information in it that I think is beneficial to someone just starting this journey. One of the things I liked the most was the 10 steps. I am a firm believer in taking it one step at a time. Eliminate one bad thing this week, add one good thing the next week etc.. These 10 steps follow my beliefs. Take as much time as you need on each step. When you have conquered step 10 then you are ready to dive into one week of 100% raw- for what Raw Chef Andi calls the Joyful Jumpstart Week. Not every person can just dive into the raw food world 100% all at once. This book helps you to ease into it- making better choices along the way.
Pt 1. Introducing a New Way To Eat
* The Discovery- Chef Andi's journey to a raw food diet
* Why Eat Raw- The benefits, what is raw?, enzymes, raw meat, what does the mean for you?
* Food Categories- what is a fruit?, what is a nut and what is a seed?, what is a green?, what are fats?, what is a sweet?, putting it together, fruits list, greens list
* Proper Food Combining
* Protein
* Best to Worst Diets
Pt 2 The Plan
* 10 Steps to Dietary Health
* Joyful Jumpstart Week
* The Diet Plan
* Getting Started
Pt 3 The Recipes- There are more than 50 raw food recipes
* Beverages
* Green Smoothies
* Salads
* Salad Dressings
* Snacks
* Entrees
* Desserts
* Purchasing Seasonally
* Storing your produce
* FAQS
I have been high raw for almost a month now but had stalled over a week with my weight loss. Using a couple of tips from this book and my weight loss has picked back up again. I would recommend this book to someone just starting out in their journey towards health. Thanks Raw Chef Andi!

Naked Chocolate: The Astonishing Truth About the World's Greatest Food Review

Naked Chocolate: The Astonishing Truth About the World's Greatest Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have read this book, along with Chris Kilham's entries on chocolate (theobroma cacao), and my own ethnobotanical / biochemical studies through many avenues of interest. I always enjoy learning more about the history and culture of this interesting tree. Unfortunately, my scientific disposition compels me look at the health sensationalism surrounding chocolate rather skeptically. Of course, these kinds of reviews are rarely popular (and even less so in the USA), but I feel that I do people looking for health a great disservice by not dispensing my knowledge of chocolate, a perspective which merely takes this work into account.
Theobromine - Firstly, chocolate has stimulants (most people erroneously think is has substantial caffeine, which it does not) - chocolate has an analogous alkaloid, called "theobromine" occurring predominantly. It is a strong stimulant alkaloid with an effect on the nervous system, particularly the heart. The cardiotoxicity of this alkaloid has not been established, and I will firstly press for caution here. The effect of this alkaloid is enhanced by the substantial magnesium content of the chocolate.
Tannins - Raw chocolate is rich in tannins, responsible for the bitterness of the chocolate. Tannin in high concentration is an anti-nutrient, binding up and preventing the absorption of minerals in the digestive system. It also adversely affects the kidneys. Raw chocolate has a very high tannin content, more so than some tannin-rich fruits (such as the skins of jaboticaba), which are recommended to only be eaten in small quantity. Does this rule of potential tannin toxicity not apply to chocolate? I wouldn't think so.
Surplus - Lastly, and partly from having grown cacao trees myself, is the observation that chocolate can be a surplus crop in many areas of the world. Theobroma Cacao bears continuously and prolifically from trees that are surprisingly easy to grow in appropriate climates. Commercially, raw cacao beans are available at bulk wholesale relatively cheap. (Yes, even the organic ones.) Why do we see disproportionately high prices on raw chocolate products? To me, this means the public is paying high retail prices, based on this rather aggressive "health food" marketing we see- a situation which to me suggests a veil of pretense (though perhaps inadvertent) concerning the whole ordeal. Somebody is making a very high profit off this particular commodity. Hint: it's not the Cacao farmers / growers. I think a good skeptical pause is warranted.
What is the point of this review? I have nothing against the authors, whose work I do enjoy. In fact I do eat a raw diet myself, being a tropical fruit grower and researcher. I think the lesson to learn here is we should respect certain foods for what they are, and not worship them for the energy and enthusiasm they impart. This is a key marketing strategy used pervasively nowadays- the idea that whole foods which make you 'feel good' are healthy and 'good for you.' Chocolate fits that bill indeed. Obtaining good health is, in actuality, a subtle endeavor, and "feeling good" is not a reliable or informative gauge for determining a food's overall virtues, or necessarily the state of one's health.
How many foods / substances out there make us feel good, only to burn us out faster? Thus, I stress caution, and encourage all people to research their health interests as much as possible. Hopefully, you see my point.

With the mission to "lay naked before the world the true meaning of chocolate," David Wolfe and Shazzie present a spirited and unconventional history, materia medica, and recipe book for the world's most pleasurable food: chocolate. This book describes the wonders of cacao–where it comes from, how it is processed, its three varieties, and its origins and role in pre-Columbian cultures of the Americas. It explains the scientific properties and health benefits of chocolate, and elaborates how you will lose weight, soothe your heart, double your joy, increase your sensuality, nourish your intellect, and attract prosperity by eating it!In contrast to most books about chocolate, this one focuses on the raw cacao bean, or "naked" chocolate. Of course, this chocolate manual wouldn't be complete without a step-by-step guide on what to do with the cacao beans, and over sixty original and mouthwatering chocolate recipes guaranteed to enhance your life.

Confessions of an East Coast Raw Vegan Review

Confessions of an East Coast Raw Vegan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book's honest and entertaining introduction offers inspiration and insight to anyone who seeks to improve their relationship with food. After reading it and trying many of the delicious dishes, I have significantly cut down on eating meat and overall become a healthier eater.
Even a novice dehydrator (like myself) can make AMAZING food with the recipes - they are that clear and precise. I especially love the flatbreads. As someone who tries to cut down on gluten intake, these have offered a much-needed (and better tasting) alternative to baked bread. The salads and desserts are also a hit, impressing even the most finicky eater whenever I take one to a potluck.
In sum this is absolutely brilliant. The author truly is an artist, with the palette being her canvas.

I met Eloise Nelson 2 years ago and decided to do her 14 day gourmet cleanse program just as a way to start off the spring season. At the end of the 14 days, I felt so amazing, there was no going back. I have been mostly raw for 2 years now and, while I use many cookbooks, this is my "go to" raw cookbook. Everything is simple, amazingly tasty and so good for you!! Eating raw doesn't mean giving up flavor or the enjoyment of eating. Give it 2 weeks - you'll be glad you did!

I had the pleasure of meeting Carmella a few times and having extended conversations. She is an amazing, down to earth, realistic person. The last time I saw her, she had this book published. I own so so many Raw, Vegan, Paleo books but I have to say, this is at the top of the list. Its a no-frills, information packed book with plenty of easy and mouthwatering dishes (and color photos for almost every recipe). Who else has step by step recipes for Kombucha, KimChi and Irish Moss? Her blog, as well as Kristen-Suzanne's Raw Blog spot, are my favorites. Both down to earth ladies who primary goal is to deliver a lot of information to you (and not to sell you on their products and seminars.). If you purchase this book, you will not be disappointed.

The Raw Foods Resource Guide Review

The Raw Foods Resource Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just love this little book, and I wish I'd had it when I first started working toward a raw diet. Don't let it's little size fool you (about 6x8" - perfect stocking stuffer!). It's one of the most useful books on raw foods that I've ever read, despite it's having only 90 pages. Jeremy Saffron, author of The Fasting Handbook: Dining from an Empty Bowl, has mastered the art of saying a lot by saying very little. He chooses his topics with care and covers them succinctly and completely.
Let me tell you what you'll get out of this book besides a complete list of raw restaurants and food sources. He answers all the questions that I and many others asked as raw food newbies (and frankly were still wondering about), like "Is nutritional yeast really raw?" and "If you could give me a list of the top five foods to include in my diet, what would they be?" I especially liked his sections on travel, dehydrating, foraging, and culturing, and extras like Easy Indoor Gardening and Types of Raw Food Diets (Hydrorians? Who knew?).
This is THE perfect gift for someone considering adopting a raw food diet.

This author did not waste one page of her book with uselss information. If you are interested in ntrition, eating healthy, and are toying with the idea of eating raw, this book is for you. The information is not overwhelming, and the author does not come across as a fanatic, but rather informs the reader of the diet's benefits, and motivates you to at least try this intriguing way of eating. This is probably the one book to really get the beginner started on becoming a raw foodist. There are a ton of resources in the book that makes this a must have for the raw food enthuiast as well as for the beginner. I read the entire book in one weekend, and bought one of the books she recommended and loved it as well. The Raw Food Detox Diet by Natalia Rose is the book that will actually get you through the steps and process of integrating the raw food lifestyle way of eating. The Raw Food Diet Myth is a thought provoking exploration of the revolutionary philosophy of raw and living foods. Author and raw foodist Dr. Ruthann Russo proves that raw food is much more than a diet. She does this by bringing together an enjoyable and clear description of the food, lifestyle, treatment of the earth, each other and the quest for physical, spiritual and mental health within the raw food movement. In the section on Basics, you will read about the long and strong history of the raw food movement beginning with early leaders like physicians Max Bircher-Benner and Max Gerson to leaders of today like Dr. Gabriel Cousens and David Wolfe. In the Food section, Russo describes healthy conflict within the movement in chapters devoted completely to raw chocolate, raw sweeteners, and water. In the Lifestyle Russo delves into health, spirituality and physical fitness as well as ethics, economics, and even raw pets. The book provides you with worthwhile information to make a conscious decision about whether to incorporate any of the raw and living food philosophy into your own philosophy of living.

The purpose of this book is to introduce you to the revolutionary philosophy of raw and living foods by pulling together all of the components, including, but not limited to, diet, into one place. The book provides you with information to make a conscious decision about whether you will, or perhaps already have, incorporated any of the raw and living food philosophy into your own philosophy of living. The Raw Food Diet Myth covers:

The history of raw food lifestyle
Raw vs Living food
How to get raw
What you ll need to go raw
A list of acidic foods to avoid whether you are raw or not

The Raw Truth: The Art of Preparing Living Foods Review

The Raw Truth: The Art of Preparing Living Foods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jeremy Saffron has done a good job compiling information on some of the more obscure fruits and veggies for the beginner to identify for further inquiry. Soak and sprouting times are nice and handy for the most used seeds, legumes, nuts and beans.
Some of the Recipes call for exotic ingredients such as amasake, durian, sapote, nigari and carambola. I do think that this is a good thing because for the motivated beginner, it will instigate the reader into searching out and becoming familiar with the asian, indonesian and filipino markets that many of these ingredients are from.
I do think that a bit more on the side of specifics of preperation could have been written. Fermentation, dehydrating and description of the exotic ingredients would have really helped out a few of the recipes. However, I really do like the descriptions of how he has used some of the recipes and what they might best be accompanied with. I have made entire delicious dinners to serve 6 people with his recommendations and very high appeasment from my guests.
I do have to say a few things about the rawness of this book however. Braggs Liquid Aminos is NOT raw, and he uses it frequently in his book, as does Rita Romano in her book "Dining in the Raw". There is a LIVING (the difference between Living and Raw is that Raw is nothing more than a living specimine from the vegetable kingdom, while LIVING reffers to a particularly enzymatically active cultured food, such as Nama Shoyu (( which is what I suggest instead of Braggs Liquid Aminos)), Kimchee, Sauerkraut or unpasturized Pickles. These all contain beneficial bacteria which has not been heated and is considered living) form of soy sauce called Nama Shoyu and it is a great alternative, although it is not Raw either. Himalayan Salt is the best alternative and is full of trace minerals.
All together this is a great start for delicious recipes with a distinctly exotic flare from specific areas of the globe, particularly Asia. I recommend this book to vets and newcommers alike who want a different look on the raw foods movement that is happening right now.
One last thing, this book lacks pictures with the exception of the 2 pages in the middle with 8 pictures total of some of the more pretty recipes. Do your best in making these recipes look great for any guests you might have as it will increase their acceptance of anything without meat. I find that other books with an abundance of pictures are more easy to follow in how the recipe should look.

FRUGAL RAW is the answer for me. Really, I have long wondered if it would be possible for me to "go raw." Thompson's book makes it all so possible, and greatly enjoyable. Recipes too simple? If they were more complicated, this book would not serve my needs.

Raw Foods for Busy People: Simple and Machine-Free Recipes for Every Day

Its very apparent that a lot of love went into making this book. The layout, additional info and resources are excellent and presented very clearly.
As a single guy with not a lot of free time I searched all over for a Raw Foods cookbook that I could use. This is the ONLY book I found that has things I'd eat, enjoy and are easy to make without exorbitant costs or prep times or weird ingredients.
Honestly after researching a lot of the Raw Foods books I figured the only people who could eat this way are housewives with a lot of money, I couldnt imagine anyone spending the time or wanting to eat a lot of the recipes in these other books.
After making many things from the book I can say that they fall into two categories-great or bland/too watery. Things like the cinnamon stewed apples, cashew cream, schezwan marinade, halvah shake, puddings and the dehydrator recipes are outstanding. Others like the gravy, curry apple marinade, tahini marinade, mashed potatoes and others are way too watery or lack flavor. I'd still rate this book 5 stars since theres no other raw cookbook like this but I think she needs to fine tune some of these recipes.
Would still highly reccomend it though. It was a big relief to get a practical book like this after my 1st purchase- Raw in Ten which was truly an awful raw book.

I've been "experimenting" with raw foods for over a year; and, I've read several books on the subject. This by far is the best, most comprehensive book I have read. The book is divided into three parts. The first, "The Basics", introduces the reader to raw and living foods in general. This section includes the reasons for raw and living foods, short biographies of the main raw food leaders, and provides the reader with exercises to determine her/his own nutritional goals. The second section, "The Food", looks at the debate around chocolate, sweeteners, pH levels, supplements and preparations. The last section, "The Lifestyle", moves beyond just food to exploring the overall lifestyle which includes fitness and spiritual health. Further, this last section moves to what needs to be done beyond the individual (national, social and economic factors of raw food). Russo provides a ton of resources throughout the book and a useful glossary.
I appreciate her tone. The book reads more like a welcome into the rawfood lifestyle than a didactic list of dos and don'ts and fear-inducing cries about toxins. This book is a well-balanced introduction to the lifestyle. While reading it I could imagine it being used in any nutrition class as a textbook on raw food. Very well done.

Ruthann Russo has been a vegetarian and vegan for more than 20 years, and in 2007 became a passionate raw-food enthusiast. She brings that passion to the pages of this comprehensive introduction to raw and live food. In simple, encouraging language, she conveys a wealth of information, from the philosophy of raw-food nutrition, to how it affects the body, to how to transition from a regular diet to one that promotes physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Using examples from her own life, Russo lays out a practical plan for making the switch that starts with realizing the need to change one's diet (and health), and then stresses small dietary changes to discover what raw foods work, and assessing reactions. She profiles cacao, raw sweeteners, water, pH level of foods, juices versus smoothies, salt, the process of dehydrating food, garlic and onions, and overall food preparation. Russo highlights what supplements (superfoods, vitamins, green products) to include in the diet. She emphasizes the spiritual aspects of the movement as well, exploring meditation, yoga, Buddhism, peacefulness, and fasting.
