The Fruits and Greens Diet: A 10 Step Guide for a Lifetime of Dietary Health
Average Reviews:

This book was an easy read- I got through it in one evening. It contains a lot of great information in it that I think is beneficial to someone just starting this journey. One of the things I liked the most was the 10 steps. I am a firm believer in taking it one step at a time. Eliminate one bad thing this week, add one good thing the next week etc.. These 10 steps follow my beliefs. Take as much time as you need on each step. When you have conquered step 10 then you are ready to dive into one week of 100% raw- for what Raw Chef Andi calls the Joyful Jumpstart Week. Not every person can just dive into the raw food world 100% all at once. This book helps you to ease into it- making better choices along the way.
Pt 1. Introducing a New Way To Eat
* The Discovery- Chef Andi's journey to a raw food diet
* Why Eat Raw- The benefits, what is raw?, enzymes, raw meat, what does the mean for you?
* Food Categories- what is a fruit?, what is a nut and what is a seed?, what is a green?, what are fats?, what is a sweet?, putting it together, fruits list, greens list
* Proper Food Combining
* Protein
* Best to Worst Diets
Pt 2 The Plan
* 10 Steps to Dietary Health
* Joyful Jumpstart Week
* The Diet Plan
* Getting Started
Pt 3 The Recipes- There are more than 50 raw food recipes
* Beverages
* Green Smoothies
* Salads
* Salad Dressings
* Snacks
* Entrees
* Desserts
* Purchasing Seasonally
* Storing your produce
* FAQS
I have been high raw for almost a month now but had stalled over a week with my weight loss. Using a couple of tips from this book and my weight loss has picked back up again. I would recommend this book to someone just starting out in their journey towards health. Thanks Raw Chef Andi!

14 Day Gourmet Cleanse and Rejuvenation Program

I met Eloise Nelson 2 years ago and decided to do her 14 day gourmet cleanse program just as a way to start off the spring season. At the end of the 14 days, I felt so amazing, there was no going back. I have been mostly raw for 2 years now and, while I use many cookbooks, this is my "go to" raw cookbook. Everything is simple, amazingly tasty and so good for you!! Eating raw doesn't mean giving up flavor or the enjoyment of eating. Give it 2 weeks - you'll be glad you did!

Delightfully Raw: Delectable Recipes from Carmella's Sunny Raw Kitchen

I had the pleasure of meeting Carmella a few times and having extended conversations. She is an amazing, down to earth, realistic person. The last time I saw her, she had this book published. I own so so many Raw, Vegan, Paleo books but I have to say, this is at the top of the list. Its a no-frills, information packed book with plenty of easy and mouthwatering dishes (and color photos for almost every recipe). Who else has step by step recipes for Kombucha, KimChi and Irish Moss? Her blog, as well as Kristen-Suzanne's Raw Blog spot, are my favorites. Both down to earth ladies who primary goal is to deliver a lot of information to you (and not to sell you on their products and seminars.). If you purchase this book, you will not be disappointed.

This author did not waste one page of her book with uselss information. If you are interested in ntrition, eating healthy, and are toying with the idea of eating raw, this book is for you. The information is not overwhelming, and the author does not come across as a fanatic, but rather informs the reader of the diet's benefits, and motivates you to at least try this intriguing way of eating. This is probably the one book to really get the beginner started on becoming a raw foodist. There are a ton of resources in the book that makes this a must have for the raw food enthuiast as well as for the beginner. I read the entire book in one weekend, and bought one of the books she recommended and loved it as well. The Raw Food Detox Diet by Natalia Rose is the book that will actually get you through the steps and process of integrating the raw food lifestyle way of eating. I didn't care for the titles of the books, but the content is amazing! Another must-have book if the Complete Book of Raw Food. With these 3 books, you are set for years as a raw foodie!

The Raw Food Diet Myth is a thought provoking exploration of the revolutionary philosophy of raw and living foods. Author and raw foodist Dr. Ruthann Russo proves that raw food is much more than a diet. She does this by bringing together an enjoyable and clear description of the food, lifestyle, treatment of the earth, each other and the quest for physical, spiritual and mental health within the raw food movement. In the section on Basics, you will read about the long and strong history of the raw food movement beginning with early leaders like physicians Max Bircher-Benner and Max Gerson to leaders of today like Dr. Gabriel Cousens and David Wolfe. In the Food section, Russo describes healthy conflict within the movement in chapters devoted completely to raw chocolate, raw sweeteners, and water. In the Lifestyle Russo delves into health, spirituality and physical fitness as well as ethics, economics, and even raw pets. The book provides you with worthwhile information to make a conscious decision about whether to incorporate any of the raw and living food philosophy into your own philosophy of living.

The purpose of this book is to introduce you to the revolutionary philosophy of raw and living foods by pulling together all of the components, including, but not limited to, diet, into one place. The book provides you with information to make a conscious decision about whether you will, or perhaps already have, incorporated any of the raw and living food philosophy into your own philosophy of living. The Raw Food Diet Myth covers:

How can one afford a raw lifestyle? How does one find the time to prepare the food? Where does one find simple recipes for delicious raw dishes?
FRUGAL RAW is the answer for me. Really, I have long wondered if it would be possible for me to "go raw." Thompson's book makes it all so possible, and greatly enjoyable. Recipes too simple? If they were more complicated, this book would not serve my needs.
And I think the guacamole recipe is wonderful.

The Raw Food Lifestyle: The Philosophy and Nutrition Behind Raw and Live Foods Review

The Raw Food Lifestyle: The Philosophy and Nutrition Behind Raw and Live Foods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been "experimenting" with raw foods for over a year; and, I've read several books on the subject. This by far is the best, most comprehensive book I have read. The book is divided into three parts. The first, "The Basics", introduces the reader to raw and living foods in general. This section includes the reasons for raw and living foods, short biographies of the main raw food leaders, and provides the reader with exercises to determine her/his own nutritional goals. The second section, "The Food", looks at the debate around chocolate, sweeteners, pH levels, supplements and preparations. The last section, "The Lifestyle", moves beyond just food to exploring the overall lifestyle which includes fitness and spiritual health. Further, this last section moves to what needs to be done beyond the individual (national, social and economic factors of raw food). Russo provides a ton of resources throughout the book and a useful glossary.
I appreciate her tone. The book reads more like a welcome into the rawfood lifestyle than a didactic list of dos and don'ts and fear-inducing cries about toxins. This book is a well-balanced introduction to the lifestyle. While reading it I could imagine it being used in any nutrition class as a textbook on raw food. Very well done.

Ruthann Russo has been a vegetarian and vegan for more than 20 years, and in 2007 became a passionate raw-food enthusiast. She brings that passion to the pages of this comprehensive introduction to raw and live food. In simple, encouraging language, she conveys a wealth of information, from the philosophy of raw-food nutrition, to how it affects the body, to how to transition from a regular diet to one that promotes physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Using examples from her own life, Russo lays out a practical plan for making the switch that starts with realizing the need to change one's diet (and health), and then stresses small dietary changes to discover what raw foods work, and assessing reactions. She profiles cacao, raw sweeteners, water, pH level of foods, juices versus smoothies, salt, the process of dehydrating food, garlic and onions, and overall food preparation. Russo highlights what supplements (superfoods, vitamins, green products) to include in the diet. She emphasizes the spiritual aspects of the movement as well, exploring meditation, yoga, Buddhism, peacefulness, and fasting.

Becoming Raw: The Essential Guide to Raw Vegan Diets Review

Becoming Raw: The Essential Guide to Raw Vegan Diets
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is so much more than a simple raw food cookbook or commentary on raw food diets. I was surprised at the amount of information packed into this book. It has all sorts of nutritional information and easy to read tables on just about anything you can imagine relating to this way of eating. Here are just a few titles of the tables included: Research summary of the effects of cooking on phytochemicals, Calories, protein, fat, carbohydrate and water in raw food (6 pages long), Fatty acid composition of selected foods, Vitamins in raw foods, Minerals in raw foods, Vitamins A,C,E,K, and D: adult dietary reference intakes and intakes on raw and high-raw diets. And those are just a few. I like tables because I can get information at a glance and compare different values so this is really a good book for me.
You don't have to be a total raw food convert to enjoy this book. Even if you're just thinking about adding more healthful raw foods to your diet, I think you'll find this book as useful as I have. It starts out with a history of the raw food movement, gives lots of scientific evidence on why it can be a healthy way of eating, and then goes on to give all kinds of information, things you've probably never even thought about, on incorporating raw foods into your diet or going totally raw. It tells you what you need to know if you do decide to take the plunge, about getting all the nutrients you need.
There is a small section with raw food recipes and another section with full meal menus which I found especially helpful. I'm not looking (yet) to totally adopt this kind of diet but I would like to add a lot more raw food to our everyday meals. The recipes are pretty easy and there are a good variety. A few that I've tried and enjoyed are: Caesar's Better Salad, Warm Red Cabbage Salad, Morocc-Un-Butter and Marvelous Muesli. There's also a section on handling raw food safely and another on food enzymes. It's all easy to read and understand.
There's a large reference section, a glossary and an index. To me, this is important because I want to know the science or studies behind statements, not just take the author at his word. This is a high quality book, probably the best I've found on this subject.

This book contains a wealth of information on the raw food lifestyle. Nutrition experts Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina once again provide the essential information needed to safely embrace a new dietary lifestyle. As they did for vegetarians and vegans in Becoming Vegetarian and Becoming Vegan, they present the first authoritative look at the science behind raw foods. And both old converts to raw foods and new recruits alike will be fascinated with food historian Rynn Berry's presentation of the first narrative history of the rawfoods movement in the United States. More people are jumping onto the raw foods bandwagon either to lose weight, fight chronic health problems, or simply to benefit from the high level of nutrients found in uncooked or sprouted foods. Readers will find science-based answers to tough questions about raw foods and raw diets, easy-to-follow nutritional guidelines, and practical information on how to construct a raw diet that meets recommended nutrient intakes simply and easily. A section of over forty-five recipes provides dishes for any time of day and every occasion. Nutritional analyses are given for each recipe. Also included is a section on what foods and equipment are needed to get started and what raw food preparation basics are good to master. This book is a major contribution to the raw foods movement.

If you are looking for excellent raw cuisine, or if you are interested in great vegan recipes, try this book. Having experimented with both for 20 years, I find this book to be among the best in either genre. The Goddess of Raw Foods Review

The Goddess of Raw Foods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I need to preface my review by saying that for those of you who really love this book, please don't get upset with my review. I acknowledge all your reasons for loving THE GODDESS OF RAW FOODS. I just think maybe others will appreciate some counterpoint.
I eagerly purchased this raw food recipe book based on all of the beautiful 5 stars reviews here. Hungry for new living food recipes, some variety and a new spin on the raw vegan lifestyle, I really wanted a new recipe book to love and hoped this would be the one. Sadly, it was not and I decided to return it. That's not to say that this beautiful book, authored by the equally beautiful and accomplished Nwenna Kai, is not a fine book. It is. It is just not for me. Why and why the 3 stars only?
Well, my main criticism concerns the actual content of the book. It is deceptive, by which I mean to say that the huge print takes up too much space in such a short book. It actually put me in mind of a children's book, making it difficult at first for me to connect with Nwenna's message. There are only 130 pages of volume but when you consider that much of that space is dedicated to Nwenna's story, her food philosphy and some useless lists (like the sexiest fruits, etc), all in super large print...well, you just don't get much bang for the buck. The recipes are indeed impressive ~ fresh, creative and appealing and the photos are gorgeous. I just wished for more. I could appreciate the large print if the book in fact offered more content.
I love that Nwenna dedicated the book to the Mahatma Gandhi. I hope other readers will also notice her touching dedication to his memory.
The book itself is well organized and offers both a good Table of Contents and Index which I always appreciate in any recipe book. Nwenna's writing style is charming and her recipes are written clearly ~ they should be no challenge for the beginner raw foodie but still fun for the experienced.
I for the most part am a well-seasoned, lowfat raw vegan and the first thing I evaluate a raw foods books by is the fat content of its recipes. After reviewing Nwenna's recipes, I find they are a little rich for my diet but they are still original and interesting. This book could be a good starting point for the beginning raw foodist, making the raw vegan diet more enticing, but the amount of nuts, seeds, avocado, coconut and oil called for in many of these recipes is not necessarily healthy and can be quite challenging on the digestion. It is the digestion difficulties that often cause the failures in the raw food diet. I personally cannot eat this way every day but rather only on special occasions and then in moderation.
I'm sure THE GODDESS OF RAW FOODS will be a fun and "sexy" book for many raw food enthusiasts. It's a very nice book but it's just not for me.

Raw Food for Real People: Living Vegan Food Made Simple by the Chef and Founder of Leaf Organics Review

Raw Food for Real People: Living Vegan Food Made Simple by the Chef and Founder of Leaf Organics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This is a great book for not only those new to the raw diet, but for seasoned raw fooders like myself. I am the author of my own raw food book and have seen everything out there. This is a keeper. What makes it special is that it is written by the owner of a raw food restaurant chain, New Leaf. Though I have not been to the restaurant I have sampled many of their goodies that are sold at Whole Foods in the refrigerated gourmet raw foods section. Now I am finally in possession of some of these restaurant quality recipes, such as the falafels, carrot cake with orange icing, Leaf Organics house dressing, wraps, etc.
The book is so much more than a recipe book. It includes a great deal of information such as why organic is important (the author thinks it is more so than even raw; I disagree), the author's story, why raw is better than cooked, how to transition to raw, dealing with food addictions, setting up a raw food kitchen, the benefits of probiotics, and more. Some segments are written by other authors. There is even a handy sprouting guide (an entire chapter which includes a chart) and a chapter on kids eating raw. Rod's writing style includes humor and wit to prove his points: "If you can cut an apple in half, you are a raw-food chef....(To keep it simple and natural)"Avoid adding too many cups of ego to your recipes."
The recipe chapters include dehydrated goodies (crackers, croquettes, pizza, bread), breakfast (smoothies, porridges, granola), appetizers, salad meals (includes dressings and wraps), soups, entrees, and desserts. Some of the recipes I am chomping at the bit to try include the "love loaf" for a Thanksgiving feast, the" Middle Eastern lentil soup", veggie sun burger croquettes, and the "groovy granola."
I appreciate that there are quite a few international raw dishes. When people go raw, they often miss their ethnic dining: Mexican, Indian, Chinese food, etc. But among these recipes you will find Spanish gazpacho; Middle Eastern soup, wraps, falafels & hummus; Mexican corn chowder; Mediterranean burgers; Sicilian Savory Snaps; several variations of raw pizza; pad thai, and more. The author talks about how he traveled a lot before opening the restaurant, and it shows in his cuisine!
So whether you just want a raw version of good ol' American "fish" sticks or apple pie, or you crave raw international fare, either way, this is something you will be glad to have on your shelf!

The Raw Food Primer Review

The Raw Food Primer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having read literally DOZENS of great raw foods books, (as a raw foods nutrition specialist, I have to know this subject, backwards and forwards,) I must say, I was underwhelmed. This book just simply is NOT a raw foods primer, as the title states, but the "artist's" self-promotion.
A primer would teach basic raw foods techniques. You'd be better off with Steve Meyerowitz' Sproutman's Kitchen Garden Cookbook. At least you'd learn how to sprout, how to juice, how to dehydrate, etc. This book assumes you already know that.
A primer would teach basic recipes. You'd be better off with Rhio's Hooked on Raw. At least you'd have dozens upon dozens of simple, basic recipes you could go home and fix up for dinner TONIGHT.
All this book is, is several pages the "artist's" ART work, and a few pages of boring, overly-complicated froo-froo cuisine.
This is NOT a primer. It's showing off.

Forget everything you have been taught about eating raw. This is not a boring book about bland salads and munching on carrot sticks for breakfast lunch and dinner —The Raw Food Primer is filled with fifty delicious, easy-to-follow recipes that are sure to make your tummy growl.Eating is more than just taking nutrients in. It's also pleasure, communion, and the taste of life. With the blossoming of raw food as an artistic cuisine, eating is also about discovering intense natural flavors and enticing high palate food lovers to explore new/old ways to eat. As the raw food movement enters the culinary mainstream, Chef Alex is right here to help with The Raw Food Primer as a starter kit. Those who try these succulent recipes will enjoy deep comfort, great nutrition, and fresh paths to glowing health.For many, raw food is already a way of life. But when we try to explain it to friends, family or students who don't yet know the pleasures and the benefits of eating "raw", they may say, "You can't keep up your energy with raw carrots" or "Yuck! That sounds really boring" or "I can't give up my pasta!" To answer such remarks, Chef Alex has written The Raw Food Primer. She gently introduces "first timers" to the concept of raw foods and a vegetarian diet. Encouraging them to add raw food slowly to their diet, she avoids a zealous approach that may frighten off people curious about "uncooking" but not quite ready to give raw cuisine a full embrace. With her charming, low-pressure style, Ferrara eases the reader into true eagerness to try tasty raw dishes and reap the health benefits like more energy. Many people who have gone raw report that they have a leaner structure, clearer skin and eyes, and they no longer experience problems with allergies or fatigue.The Raw Food Primer is perfect for curious students of this revolutionary food experience or the more experienced raw foodist — or anyone who merely appreciates delicious food.

Just got the book and the cover makes me want to eat it. YUM-O! I have all of his books and have been a active raw foodist so getting this book has been worth the wait. I have made the chocolate chip cookies before from the Everyday raw book which my picky son loves so much he keeps eating all of it! Matthew seems to write from the heart and soul of being a raw food vegan. In this book, he writes that his goal is to show how restaurant-style desserts are easily made with little time. For a raw foodist, this book may make you crave desserts 24 hrs, 7 days a week. For the person that is looking for some raw vegan desserts that tastes good, makes you feel good and not that much of a hassle, this is the book for you. The only issue is for someone that has nut allergies, the amount of cashew/mac flour that is used will be a problem.

I received this book in eager anticipation and was not disappointed. I have found the recipes in this book delicious and satisfying. Green Beauty and Pico de Gallo are just a few of my favorites. I can make the Chia Custard Shake and feel totally full when I need something in the middle of the day. Ruby's Smokin' Hot Tomato Soup is so good. Wonderful book. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to incorporate healthy and tasty alternatives to their diet.
